Sometimes a dumb question gets you a smart answer, and a new experience under your belt!  Don’t be afraid to ask directions, and be open to the destinations they lead.

Every once in a while you need a silly story, and here it is.  It shows how if you have a sense of humor and are open to experiences, life can take some fun turns along the way.

Years ago while working in video production, Chuck and I were sent down to Washington D.C. to interview Daniel Patrick Moynihan.  Chuck was the cameraman/editor and I wrote the scripts and did the interviews.

On the way back up we were in a good mood—it was sunny and warm, the job was behind us for now, and we were tooling around somewhere in Pennsylvania.  We stopped at a diner in the middle of nowhere.

Now Chuck could be a jokester, especially around attractive young ladies.  He could always be counted on to get us into an adventure.  When I saw I waitress, I knew something was bound to happen.

We ordered, and when our food came I heard Chuck ask “Oh, by the way—we are supposed to be videotaping at Dinosaur Land, but we can’t find it.  Can you give us directions?”

I nearly sprayed my ice tea across the table, but she took him absolutely seriously.

“No, I’ve never heard of that, but…..wait a minute.”

With that our waitress went over to a group of senior citizens, pointed to us, and started to ask them how to get to Dinosaur Land.

I was ready to pound Chuck, who was rolling in his booth.  I wanted him to apologize when she got back.  He didn’t have the chance.

“Here’s how to get to Dinosaur Land” the waitress told us, spreading a napkin map out on the table.  “It’s just up the road from here, but I never heard of it.”

Chuck and I looked at each other, speechless.  We finally nodded a thanks and the waitress was off, with a good tip.

We went to Dinosaur Land, which turned out to be a rock exposure where dinosaur fossils had been found.  We rolled under the fence and looked around.  We never did find any dinosaurs, but it was a great experience, and a complete and wonderful surprise.

Another time we shot at the Disney Studios in California, and they kindly presented us with two tickets to Disneyland for the next day.  That night we saw an ad for a nudist colony in Topanga Canyon.  I’ve still never been to Disneyland, but I had another neat and memorable experience!

The moral of the story is, stay loose and flexible and appreciate the adventures life throws your way.

It’s an especially good rule for when you are on the road!
