Our Huge Mexico City Adventure, Part V

Our Huge Mexico City Adventure, Part V
In which we eat at an incredible buffet, and visit a miniatures shop in the fancy Zona Rosa.
If I look tickled pink, its because I'm at my favorite buffet in the world. I've been here tens of times on business, but it is Omar's first visit. He loved it (and he knows from food).

Omar dives right in. The place isn't very big, and a constant parade of food emerges from the kitchen, so the ollas (clay pots) end up balanced one above the other. Just when you're full, a server passes by with something you just have to try!

One of our favorites, chiles en nogada. Nogada is the nut sauce spread over the mincemeat stuffed, roasted chiles. Pomagranite seeds are sprinkled on top.

Tortitas de carne en salsa verde. Shredded beef fried with egg, in spicy tomatillo and chile sauce. Omar has since made this at home. Don't let the humble looks fool you--its heaven on earth.

Whole fried tilapia. I will never understand people's aversion to eating fish with their heads on (the fish's head, I mean). I remember the first time I ordered an entire fish in a market, and was amazed at the lady deep frying them in a huge vat of grease. As a fish rose to the surface she would grab a fin with her bare hands and either turn it over or flip the fish on a plate.

Cheese soup (above) was smooth and flavorful. I believe the other soup is lentil.

People eat with their eyes, and the buffet puts their best dishes right in the window. You can either feel smug or guilty for eating so well, depending on your disposition. At $15 dollars, this buffet is a splurge--but the food is wonderful and varied and is well worth it.

Stuffed and content, we waddled to the Zona Rosa, where there is a tiny shop which sells only miniatures. These boxed scenes from daily life are great. The gal in the bath says "Once a year never hurt anyone." The lady in the pink dress with the tequila on the table prays "Lord, please make me a widow." Pancho Cachondo is like "Harvey Hunk" or "Billy Bubblebutt"--the local lothario.

The detail on some of these are amazing--especially considering they are only about four inches long. Skeletons are often depicted as funny--it is the Mexican way of making death humorous instead of frightening.

There is a good variety to chose from. One thing I love about Mexico is that you can find strange little specialty shops like this, with all the wares out for inspection, instead of being shrinkwrapped and hung on a card. You really feel close to the artist who made these treasures.

Skeleton figures--these are about 9 inches high, and are made of papier mache. The flying ones are our favorites--we have a monarch winged one, and a knockout devil!

This is half the shop. Along with the boxed scenes, they also sell lead figures and clay characters in tiny glass bottles.

The kind of store I dreamed of as a child. These are hand-painted lead figures. OK--be honest. Is this what you thought of when you first heard "Mexico City?"

Regular readers know I'm a Bela Lugosi fan (and Omar isn't--nobody's perfect). Here's Bela as Dracula, sort of.

Clay characters in glass bottles, each about an inch and a half tall. There are 150 different ones in this tower--and there are two towers.

Another popular character from my chlldhood. You can find almost any cartoon character here--Felix the Cat, Donald Duck--as well as some movie monsters and of course, Santo-el Enmascarado de Plata (our favorite masked wrestler!).

It's detailed work, requiring a steady hand. So much talent goes into these beautiful pieces, it is amazing they charge so little. This musketeer would go for less than $5.

No trip to Mexico City is complete without a visit to the Angel de Independencia, symbol of Mexico.

The Angel has fallen at least twice, in earthquakes. The funny thing is, to prevent the column from sinking in the soft soil the engineers dug way down and anchored the monument on bedrock. It worked--the monument is not sinking--but the rest of the city is. Every two or three years they have to add a new step up from the road, as the monument continually grows taller.

Police scoot around on their--what do you call these things?--protecting the Angel of Independence. I'd love to ride one, but would probably fall on my face.

Dusk in Mexico City. What a wonderful place. It is nothing like I imagined it, years ago. I see that it has been voted one of the top travel destinations this year. Omar and I hope you've enjoyed our photo essay of Mexico City (and that you stay tuned for more adventures at 365Mexico). This is really only a taste of what the city has to offer--come and discover it with us!

One last photo, because I really like it. It looks straight down from our fourth floor room at Hotel Toledo, and the man in the jeans walking is Omar. There is nothing better in the world than to share!
